LaTeX for Linux?

For the first time since Stella arrived, I had the opportunity to write a LaTeX document today. But Stella had other plans. It appears that LaTeX (nor any other TeX) did not come with my computer. Sources on the internet seem to take for granted that Linux machines all come with LaTeX, but they do not! I found numerous LaTeX downloads for Windows and some for Mac, but none for Linux.

I downloaded and installed two versions of Kile before I determined that Kile does not contain LaTeX and therefore is not what I need. I downloaded TeTeX, but the installation instructions are very vague. I installed it the best I knew how, but I haven't had a chance to test it yet, and I have a feeling it's not going to work.

I attempted to give up on LaTeX all together and create a document using Open Office, but I can't insert a postscript graphic into an Open Office document. I'm not sure what to do if I can't get another version of TeX to work. I will need LaTeX or something similar in the future.
