Back to Work / MySpace
I'm back to work in Huntsville, catching up with the GRBs I've missed while I've been gone. It's been quiet on the Swift detecting front; there were only six new ones, counting one that was detected yesterday evening.
I took care of the first burst of 2007 in only an hours time today; there wasn't much going on. I'm nearly caught up with 4 of the 5 others; GRB 061222A was a beautiful, bright one. As usual, power spectral analysis came up with no significant spikes in the data.
GRB 061217 is giving me position problems. I've processed the data twice with two different coordinates and yet I see nothing where the source is supposed to be. There is a bright source on the edge of the field of view which I suspect is supposed to be the candidate afterglow, but it's far from the position error circle. I don't know if this shift is due to the errors the GRB team made while calculating the XRT position. I used the two most refined positions. I will take another look at it tomorrow.
I'm on the verge of learning how to use Burst Alert Telescope data. I need to read about the BAT specifications and software analysis tools, then play around with the gamma-ray data until I can successfully create a light curve and spectrum. This will open up the high-energy range even more for me, giving me experience with x-ray and gamma-ray data. It's also one step closer to learning how to utilize Swift as a whole.
Over break, while reading about GLAST, I stumbled onto the GLAST MySpace page. Several other observatories also have MySpace accounts. I friended Swift, of course. I was very amused.
