Minor IDL Memory Problem Solved / GRBs & Supernovae
Due to the delay of the spectacular launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery, I did not return from Florida until Wednesday night, leaving me very little time to get work done this week.
My only accomplishment of the week was fixing a small memory problem in IDL (however, the larger problem still needs to be solved or worked around). I have also completely confused myself and then re-understood a piece of IDL code. I’m getting closer to where I want to be, but I’m not there yet.
A lot of my attention this week has been on Yuki’s work, with reading part of her dissertation to discussing her latest paper with her. Her paper on GRBs with associated supernova events got me thinking: I don’t understand why we don’t see a stronger correlation between GRBs and supernovae. Is it because we can’t observe most of them because they’re too faint? What is the cause of all the GRBs we do see? I think my simplistic view of the possible origins of GRBs is being challenged. Some remolding is in order.
