Work Log Update 2

Besides running behind in writing logs, everything has been progressing relatively smoothly. The learning did not stop after the first week. Even today I found myself discovering new things about the different types of models and the physics behind what we’re doing.

Writing out a general step-by-step outline was a goal that I’m pleased I accomplished. I’m the first to admit that my memory isn’t the best, and having all the steps written in front of me helps speed along the process. Writing out every line emphasized the meanings of what we were doing, the 'why' along with the 'how'. It also forced me to develop a more efficient organizational order (what goes where and what to name files) and process order (which steps should be done when).

My goal for this week was to learn enough about the modeling process to be able to complete a few bursts next week when [my advisers are] gone. This proved to be more challenging that I anticipated, but I believe I was successful. The basics of the modeling process aren’t too difficult, but each set of data has its own unique quirks that need individual adjusting. With experience, this shouldn’t be a problem.

A main difference from previous research I’ve done is the knowledge of where my data comes from. I’m learning a lot about the detector and how photons actually become measurements. I’m also learning a lot more about error analysis than I ever have, which is very useful. I’m also becoming more familiar with UNIX. Reading articles and books has been helpful; I particularly enjoyed what I’ve read in Flash! so far about the history of GRB discovery.

Along with hopefully making real progress in data analysis next week, I plan on working with Michelle to create two posters. I have watched others put together posters and admired many final products, but I have never done so myself and I am looking forward to designing a fun and informative display.
